Soul singer PP Arnold – who bedded Hendrix – claims she was raped by Ike Turner in explosive memoir

Soul singer PP Arnold, who rose to fame as an Ikette with the Ike & Tina Turner Revue has claimed she was raped by Ike Turner in her early career.

The singer, whose real name is Patricia Ann Cole, made the claims in an explosive new memoir, Soul Survivor.

Arnold, now 75, originally from Los Angeles, writes in Soul Survivor how the late musician trapped her in her room and raped her when she was younger.

Describing it as an ‘awful’ experience, Arnold told The Telegraph she didn’t know how to express herself.

She also claimed Ike’s wife and singing partner Tina Turner wanted to get rid of Arnold because of rumours Ike was ‘after’ her.

Despite the fear she lived in while on tour, Arnold was even more reluctant to go home where her violent husband David was waiting for her.

The pair had been forced into marriage after Arnold fell pregnant with her son Kevin at the age of 15.

When a makeshift abortion with a coat hanger failed, Arnold married David and gave birth to their son.

When she was 17 she had their daughter Debbie, but far from having a happy family life Arnold said David had a ‘deep anger’ inside him.

She explained how David never hit her in the face because he didn’t want people to know he was violent towards her.

Arnold added she ‘just dealt with it’.

Recalling her frightening experiences in her memoir, Arnold said she was inspired by Maya Angelou and vowed the book would recall the truth.

After starting her career as an Ikette Arnold left Ike and Tina’s roadshow when she was just 19 years old – after Mick Jagger convinced her to go solo.

After taking her own path she rose to fame on London’s Swinging Sixties crowd – and has been known for her famous sexual exploits within the circuit.

Her memoir details her steamy sex life with Jagger, who is thought to have written Brown Sugar about her.

At the time of their dalliance Jagger was in a relationship with Marianne Faithfull – but according to Arnold, Faithfull wasn’t jealous at all and in fact joined in.

Despite describing Faithfull as a ‘good kisser’ Arnold said she felt like a ‘plaything’ between the couple.

She writes how she fell pregnant with Jagger’s baby and the pair agreed she should have an abortion.

While the Rolling Stones frontman sent her flowers, she claims he didn’t fly home from Morocco to be with her.

One of Arnold’s most famed dalliances was with Jimi Hendrix, who she says understood what she was going through.

The pair sought comfort in each other as black musicians on a very white music scene in London.

During her career Arnold also recorded with Rod Stewart, who she had been romantically involved with.

But according to the soul legend, she had fallen out of love with Stewart by the time they stepped into the recording studio.

Writing in her memoir about being in caught in bed with Stewart after a drugs bust at her flat, she calls him a ‘spoilt brat’ and ‘extremely arrogant’.

She also had a dalliance with Steve Marriott of Small Faces.

As she rose to fame on the London music scene her soulful gospel voice was her trademark and she became known as London’s First Lady of Soul.

She stunned with her debut single, a cover of The First Cut is the Deepest by Cat Stevens, before recording her other top hit Angel of the Morning.

But after signing to Immediate Records to make her first studio album, The First Lady of Immediate, she was left without a record deal when the label ran out of money.

Arnold was then taken on by Robert Stigwood – whom she met through Bee Gee Barry Gibb – to make her second album but according to her, Stigwood ‘wasn’t into [her] at all’. The album was never released.

When her second marriage to Stigwood’s chauffeur Jim Morris broke down before he went ‘underground’, Arnold moved her family from The Cotswolds back to North Hollywood where she hoped to find a new record deal.

However, tragedy struck when her daughter Debbie died in a car accident at the age of 13.

Since her daughter’s death, Arnold claims she hasn’t had a serious relationship.

The soul legend’s memoir closes in 1984 after she landed a role in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Starlight Express.

Since then she has continued to light up stages around the world – performing at Glastonbury last week.

Soul Survivor: The Autobiography is out on 7 July.
