South Perth stabbing: Man is left fighting for life after meeting with two people descends into chaos on highway

A man has been left fighting for life after he was allegedly stabbed on a busy highway.

The 35-year-old was found with multiple gashes on the Canning Highway, South Perth, about 2.40pm on Wednesday.

A Western Australian Police spokesman told Daily Mail Australia it will be alleged two men had arranged a meeting with the 35-year-old.

‘It will be alleged about 2.30pm, the accused man was walking on Canning Highway, armed with a knife and in company with another male,’ he said.

‘An altercation occurred between the three males, resulting in the 35-year-old victim being stabbed numerous times. The other two males fled the area on foot.’

Police and paramedics rushed to the grisly scene before closing surrounding roads.

The man was transported to Royal Perth Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery.

Motorists were told to avoid the area whilst the manhunt for the two men took place.

Detectives swarmed the nearby Como Bowling and Recreation Club which had been holding a wake, before finding a man in the toilets and arresting him.

The WA Police spokesman said the 18-year-old man was taken into custody before he was released without charge.

A witness who had been attending the wake said the teenager looked ‘shocked’.

‘All of sudden we noticed all the police quietly coming in and going down to the bathroom … we were wondering what was happening,’ she told the West Australian.

‘He was walking around looking dumbfounded to be honest, in a world of his own, maybe a bit shocked to be honest.’

The search for the second man continued, with police and forensic teams collecting evidence at the scene.

‘Further inquiries led Cannington Detectives to a residence in High Wycombe and a 20-year-old man was taken into custody,’ the WA Police spokesman said.

‘Detectives conducted a search of the residence where they located the knife allegedly used in the South Perth altercation.’

The man was charged with grievous bodily harm and possessing an article with intent to injure (disable).

The wall outside the residence had blood spattered on it, while clothes and a hammer were seen along the footpath.

An item that looked like a sharp tool was located in plants on the other side of the highway.

Hairdresser Paul O’Sullivan, who works nearby, told ABC Radio Perth he had left the salon when he heard a disturbance.

‘There was a guy on the footpath across the road that was down on the ground, some cars had stopped with him,’ he said.

‘There was blood everywhere. It was quite confronting.’

Mr Sullivan said two people saw him and ran from the scene into a side street, before the hairdresser found the injured man.

‘There was a big tomahawk axe, like [a] pick axe on the footpath next to him,’ he said.
