SOUTHAMPTON, England (AP) – Southampton has signed striker Guido Carrillo, who developed a reputation as an impact substitute at Monaco.
The 26-year-old Argentine is linking up again with manager Mauricio Pellegrino, who he played under at Estudiantes in their homeland.
Carrillo has signed a contract through 2021 at Southampton, which is in the Premier League relegation zone.
He netted 15 league goals in 65 games during 2 1/2 seasons with Monaco and won the 2017 French title.
The tally doesn’t reflect his scoring ability as 43 of those games were as a substitute. He scored crucial late goals, especially during the title-winning campaign.
With an aerial threat, Carrillo has the qualities to adapt quickly to English soccer.
