Massive fire erupts at a factory in Southbank in Melbourne with smoke billowing across the city’s skyline and a list of suburbs on high alert

A factory has erupted into flames in Melbourne’s CBD at Southbank, with plumes of smoke spewing into the air.

A Victoria Emergency alert said the blaze had erupted at Clarendon St, near Haig St, Southbank. 

Residents of Albert Park, Docklands, Melbourne, Port Melbourne, South Melbourne, South Wharf and Southbank are on high alert.

‘Smoke will be visible from nearby roads and communities,’ authorities said in a statement.

‘There is currently no threat to the community, but you should continue to stay informed and monitor conditions.

‘Those in high rise appartments in the area should close doors and windows to prevent smoke from entering their premises.’

Vic traffic has issued a statement saying ‘Clarendon Street, Southbank is closed to traffic and trams in both directions between City Road and Whiteman Street, due to a building fire. 

‘Motorists are asked to avoid travelling in the area where possible, using Kings Way or Queens Bridge Street to leave the CBD.’
