  • Passenger recorded video showing the flight attending resting inside the compartment intended for carry-on luggage
  • Veronica Lloyd said the airline employee remained in the bin for 10 minutes
  • Southwest in a statement chalked up the stunt to the flight attendant’s ‘sense of humor’ and ‘unique’ personality

Passengers on a Southwest Airlines flight from Nashville to Philadelphia were left scratching their heads after witnessing a flight attendant climb into an overhead bin as they boarded the flight.

A portion of the bizarre stunt – which the airline later characterized as a joke – was caught on video by a traveler and shared on Twitter.

The brief clip shows a bespectacled female crew member in Southwest’s red-and-black uniform lying on her stomach inside one of the overhead compartments intended for carry-on luggage.

Veronica Lloyd recorded the video

Passenger Veronica Lloyd, who took the video, also snapped a selfie showing the crew member propping up her head with her hand and grinning.

Lloyd’s four-second recording cuts off just as the flight attendant rolls over in the bin and addresses the passengers, but it is difficult to make out what she says.

The strange stunt took place as passengers were boarding the plane on Monday.

Lloyd told Fox News the flight attendant stayed in the carry-on bin ‘for a solid 10 minutes’.

‘I think she was doing it to try and be funny and make the passengers laugh,’ she said.

When the woman finally emerged from the compartment and resumed her duties, Lloyd said she was very friendly during the two-hour flight.

Lloyd shared her video and still photos documenting the airline employee’s antics on Twitter, writing: ‘I can’t get over how weird I find this. @SouthwestAir please get it together.’

On Tuesday, Southwest emailed a statement to DailyMail.com addressing the flight attendant’s behavior.

‘Southwest Employees are known for demonstrating their sense of humor and unique personalities,’ it read. ‘In this instance, one of our flight attendants attempted to have a brief moment of fun with Customers during boarding. Of course, this is not our normal procedure, and Southwest Crews always maintain Safety as their top priority.’
