Spanish King’s nephew ‘in knife fight outside Madrid nightclub’

Felipe Juan Froilan de Marichalar y Borbon, nephew of Spain’s King Felipe VI, has been implicated by police over his alleged involvement in a large fight involving knives in a Madrid nightclub, it has been reported.

Froilán, 24, is being investigated by national police for possible affray according to El Confidencial, the Spanish online daily. He is the grandson of Juan Carlos I, who ruled from 1975 to 2014, and is fourth in line to the Spanish throne.

Froilán could have to spend three months to one year in prison if convicted, although in Spain sentences of under two years are usually suspended for first offences.

Police were called to the Vandido nightclub on Goya street in Madrid in the early hours of November 25 to reports of a group of around 30 people fighting.

Officers discovered bloodstains and part of a car’s wing mirror on the ground. The brawl apparently started after the vehicle was damaged. A friend of the royal suffered a cut to his arm from a knife in the incident.

The 24-year-old has found himself the subject of scandal many times over the years.

In July, he left the Opium nightclub Marbella after a shooting that left numerous clubbers injured. There is no suggestion of wrongdoing by Froilán for that incident.

In April, he was reportedly punched in the face after jumping the queue for a nightclub toilet in the Spanish capital. After an exchange of words with the man waiting to use the facilities Froilán is alleged to have warned the man that he ‘didn’t know who he was speaking to’, before he was hit. The palace declined to press charges against the attacker.

In 2012, Froilán accidentally shot himself in the foot while on a farm owned by his father’s family.

It recalls an incident in 1956, when Juan Carlos accidentally fatally shot his younger brother, Alfonso, with a revolver.

Also in April, Froilán and his sister, Victoria Federica, 22, were reportedly involved in a traffic accident in the early hours of the morning in Madrid’s Salamanca neighbourhood.

The car smashed into several vehicles that were parked in the street, according to El Confidencial.

Froilán’s sister was driving at the time while he was in the passenger seat. Both were identified by the police but the incident had been kept secret until now.

Froilan’s controversies sit among a record of scandals for Spain’s royal family that his uncle has tried to inhibit during his eight years in reign.

Juan Carlos I left the country in 2020 as he was being investigated by prosecutors over alleged financial wrongdoing.
