Spectacular photos show abandoned New Orleans power plant

The Market Street Power Plant in New Orleans, Louisiana, sits abandoned along the Mississippi River but is a popular spot for filming television shows and films.

The power plant was built in in 1905 but has not produced power since 1973.

In early 2007, Entergy New Orleans sold the plant for $10million to Market Street Properties, who then sold it in foreclosure to developer Joe Jaeger after a plan to develop it never moved forward.

Jaeger is currently busy developing the nearby Trade District, and plans to incorporate the Market Street Power Plant. Right now there is no clear stop or start date and no immediate plans for the plant.

The 5-story plant has been abandoned for the last 40 years.

The facility formerly supplied electrical power to the city by burning coal and using the waters of the Mississippi River for cooling.

The property has been featured in multiple movies, including Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and the sci-fi hit Oblivion.
