Sporting Lisbon announce Ruben Amorim’s successor as head coach after the Portuguese boss officially starts Man United role

Sporting Lisbon have announced their replacement for Ruben Amorim as head coach. 

Amorim officially left his role with the Portuguese club to join Manchester United following their comeback 4-2 win over Braga on Sunday. 

The terms of his contract meant that he would take charge of three more matches at Sporting before flying to England and settling in over the international break ahead of a first fixture at Ipswich on November 24.

The 39-year-old arrived Carrington training ground on Monday afternoon and was welcomed by senior club executives.

Amorim successor at Sporting Lisbon will be Joao Pereira, who has been appointed as the club’s new head coach until 2027. 

Amorim officially left his role to join Man United following Sportin’s comeback win over Braga 

Pereira has been a coach since his retirement as a player in 2021 and was Sporting’s B team coach prior to taking the new role. 

He had three spells as a player at Sporting during his career, with the former right back part of their title winning team under Amorim in 2021.

Amorim had previously talked up Pereira’s prospects of becoming a Sporting coach in the future.

‘Joao Pereira is making his mark, I think he is an excellent coach,’ Amorim said in May.

‘He has all the conditions to become Sporting ‘s coach.’

Pereira would be tasked with continuing Sporting’s success under Amorim, who guided the club to two domestic titles and two triumphs in the Portuguese League Cup.

Joao Pereira has been appointed as the Sporting’s new head coach until 2027.

Sporting are currently well placed in the Champions League, having won three and drawn one of their opening four games.

The Portuguese giants are currently second in the revamped league phase, and top in Liga Portugal with a 100 per cent record.
