Sprawling Grade-II listed Durham country mansion hits the market for £1.75m

A sprawling country mansion in County Durham which is set in nine acres of land has hit the market for £1,750,000 at the same time a one-bedroom flat in London has gone up for the same price.

The Grade-II listed Neasham Abbey in Darlington comes with eight bedrooms, a tennis court, a cinema room, a wine cellar, a private gym and an adventure playground.

Sitting just a stone’s throw away from the River Tees, the property, which extends to just under 65,000 square feet, is arranged over two floors and includes many original period features including high ceilings, window shutters and ornate ceiling cornices and picture rails.

Meanwhile the one-bedroom flat in London, which sits on the fashionable Maddox Street, just off Regent Street, and is a mere two-minute stroll away from Oxford Circus, is less than a tenth of the size at just 638 square foot.

Neasham is housed among landscaped gardens, planted beds and manicured lawn areas leading onto parkland that extends down to the River Tees, with private fishing rights included in the sale.

It has also kept original features like open fireplaces and fully-fitted floor-to-ceiling book shelving, modern touches including a teppanyaki grill and a sauna ensure ultimate comfort.

The land which the Abbey was built on was given to the de Tees family after the Norman conquest before the present house was built in 1770 by Thomas Roper Wilkinson- ‘an enthusiastic and fearless horseman’.

The property, which the current owners acquired at the millennium,  comes with a welcoming reception hall that leads to an inner hall and staircase and an open plan dining kitchen which is fitted with bespoke painted and natural wood cabinetry and a large island unit.

Elsewhere the London property, which is situated on the fourth floor of a building, has a contemporary finish, with wooden floors and spotlights throughout the open plan kitchen living room, and a gleaming white and grey bathroom.

According to George F. White estate agents who are selling Neaham Abbey, the appeal of northern properties has grown during lockdown as people spend more time at home.

Senior Associate Melissa Lines said: ‘Now that people are re-evaluating their home life balance due to COVID, there’s a lot of people who are moving north.

‘People can still get to London in two and a half hours, they can access amenities but they can get much better value for money.

‘It’s somewhere nicer to live, away from the hustle and bustle and on your own land.

‘It’s a little country estate set in just over nine and a half acres. It’s really good value for money and the transport links are brilliant.

‘There’s been a lot of interest since it went on the market and we’ve had an offer already with more viewings set up for this week.’

Neasham Abbey was built in 1770 by ‘fearless and enthusiastic horseman’ Thomas Roper Wilkinson, though the estate’s history can be traced back to 1150.

It has been the residence of it’s current owners for 20 years and has undergone extensive modernisation across it’s formal dining room, sweeping staircase, drawing room, dazzling kitchen and four bathrooms – and according to Lines, the property is an absolute steal.

Melissa added: ‘It’s one of the nicest country houses in the area, there’s not really been anything like this on the market for quite some time.

‘It’s a lifestyle property. There’s a sauna, a gym, a full playpark with a zip wire and an amazing kitchen with every appliance you can imagine and it’s fantastic value for money.

‘Whoever ends up living here will be very lucky indeed.’
