Killer on the loose as man is stabbed to death during a brawl at Melbourne’s St Kilda beach in front of a packed crowd

A man has died after being stabbed during a wild brawl at one of Australia’s busiest city beaches.

Police were called to Melbourne’ St Kilda beach at about 7:30pm on Sunday to find the victim near Pier Rd with several stab wounds.

His identity is not yet known.

Those responsible disappeared into the packed summer crowd after fleeing on foot and remain on the run.

Detectives are now examining CCTV footage from the area in an effort to track down the killer, as witness accounts continue to roll in. 

Horrified onlookers enjoying an evening by the water at the tourist hotspot said plain-clothes and uniformed police descended on the gruesome scene ‘very quickly’. 

A police helicopter was also deployed in the aftermath. 

‘There were cops everywhere. It was crazy,’ one St Kilda regular told the Herald Sun.
