Staffordshire woman quizzed by murder detectives

The wife of a cancer stricken 82-year-old man has been quizzed by police after her husband was found dead in an apparent murder-suicide bid.

Kenneth Eccleston, known locally as Dennis, was pronounced dead at the scene while 79-year-old wife Mavis was wheeled out on a stretcher by paramedics.

Neighbours from Raven Close in Huntington, Staffordshire revealed exclusively to MailOnline that Mavis had a long history of anti-social behaviour and was well known to the local council.

Mr Eccleston, a former pitman at the old Middleton gravel pits had terminal bowel cancer and was known as a quiet and polite man. While Mavis was known as a ‘nuisance neighbour’ with a council record ‘as long as your arm,’ one resident said. 

‘She had a history of being a nuisance – very anti-social – shouting at the top of her voice for a number of years.

‘When we moved in 17 years ago a neighbour popped a letter throughout box warning us about her and telling us the council had a file as long as your arm about her.

‘Everybody complained about her,’ said her neighbour Suzie Templeman.

It is thought the pair lived in Raven Close for more than 20 years and have at least three grown up children who have since moved away. 

The cul-de-sac where he was found has a mixture of bungalows, detached and semi-detached houses.

There had been a significant police presence at the scene while forensics were examining on Tuesday.

The woman has since been released as police continue to investigate the circumstances around the death.

Neighbour Suzie Templeman, 44, said: ‘This is shocking news.

‘It is a nice leafy neighbourhood and for this to happen, it is shocking. We never really saw Dennis much. I think he had a son.’

A spokesman for Staffordshire Police said: ‘Following the death of an 82-year-old man from Cannock on Tuesday February 20. we arrested a 79-year-old woman from Cannock on suspicion of murder on Wednesday.

‘The woman has since been released under investigation as we investigate the circumstances of the man’s death further.

‘Specially trained officers are providing advice and support to the family at this difficult time.’
