Stanford’s Tara VanDerveer, 70, announces retirement after 38 years with the school as NCAA’s winningest basketball coach of all-time

Stanford’s Tara VanDerveer has retired from coaching after 38 years at the Cardinal helm and will depart the sport as the winningest coach in NCAA basketball history. 

VanDerveer’s NCAA-record 1,216 victories also includes seven years as a head coach at Idaho and Ohio State.  

The 70-year-old VanDerveer led Stanford to three NCAA Championships in 1990, 1992, and 2021. 

She is slated to be replaced by Kate Paye, a former player and longtime Cardinal assistant coach as the program switches to the Atlantic Coast Conference.
