Star Trek: Lower Decks will NOT return following the conclusion of its upcoming fifth season

The animated science fiction-comedy series Star Trek: Lower Decks will not return following the end of its upcoming fifth season.

The news about the program was revealed by the show’s creator Mike McMahan and executive producer Alex Kurtzman in a note that was posted on Star Trek’s official website on Friday.

The pair penned a lengthy note in order to both confirm the news about the entry in the Star Trek franchise and to express hope that its characters could return in sone form in the future.

Kurtzman and McMahan began the note by showing their gratitude to the show’s creative team for their efforts.

‘While five seasons of any series these days seems like a miracle, it’s no exaggeration to say that every second we’ve spent making this show has been a dream come true,’ they wrote.

‘Our incredible cast, crew and artists have given you everything they have because they love the characters they play, they love the world we’ve built, and more than anything we all love love love Star Trek,’ they continued.

The entertainment industry figures went on to confirm that Star Trek: Lower Decks would not be removed from streaming services following the release of its upcoming fifth and final season. 

‘We’re excited for the world to see our hilarious fifth season which we’re working on right now, and the good news is that all previous episodes will remain on Paramount+ so there is still so much to look forward to as we celebrate the Cerritos crew with a big send-off,’ they wrote.

Kurtznan and McMahan then expressed their thanks for the continued support of the show’s fans. 

‘Finally, thank you for always being so creative and joyful, for filling convention halls and chanting LOWER DECKS!’

The two concluded by writing that they wanted the stories of the show’s main characters to be continued in some form. 

‘We remain hopeful that even beyond Season 5, Mariner, Boimler, Tendi, Rutherford and the whole Cerritos crew will live on with new adventures,’ they wrote.

Star Trek: Lower Decks initially made its debut on CBS All Access in 2020, and it carried over to Paramount+ following the streaming service’s rebranding.

The show was centered on a the adventures of a group of low-ranking Starfleet officers assigned to the maligned USS Cerritos.

Performers such as Jack Quaid, Tawny Newsome and Jerry O’Connell round out the program’s cast.

While the program initially received mixed reviews from critics, its latter three seasons have been praised by critics, and the show as a whole currently holds a score of 92% on Rotten Tomatoes. 

Star Trek: Lower Decks’ upcoming fifth and final season is expected to make its debut later this year.
