Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker rakes in a staggering $500MILLION in its first week in cinemas… after making $32million on Christmas Day alone

It’s the final film in the Skywalker saga that concludes the nine-film epic space opera.

And Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has made a staggering $500million (£382million) in its first seven days after rolling out in cinemas across the world last week.

The epic conclusion, which stars Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and Adam Driver, brought in $32million (£24million) on Christmas Day in the U.S.

This was the biggest Christmas Day for any film since the release of The Force Awakens in 2015, which brought in $49.3million (£38million).

The Rise Of Skywalker also beat 2017’s The Last Jedi, which nabbed $27.4 million (£21million).

Meanwhile, director J.J. Abrams previously insisted the criticism of the Rise of Skywalker was ‘right’ and admitted it was impossible to please everyone.

Speaking after a screening of the movie in Hollywood, Abrams said: ‘I would say they’re right. The people who love it more than anything are also right.

‘I was asked just seven hours ago in another country, “So how do you go about pleasing everyone?” I was like ‘What…?’

‘Not to say that should be what anyone tries to do anyway, but how would one go about it? Especially with Star Wars.’

The 53-year-old filmmaker admitted it is very challenging to satisfy modern audiences.

A big deal: This was the biggest Christmas Day for any film since the release of The Force Awakens in 2015, which brought in $49.3million

The Rise Of Skywalker hopes to tie together the numerous loose ends that have been left unanswered, from the originals to Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi.

While the plot has to mostly be kept under wraps, it can be said that the film sees Emperor Palpatine return, with Rey (Daisy) and The Resistance trying to find him, while Supreme Leader Kylo Ren (Adam) is also on the trail.

The Rise Of Skywalker is the franchise’s fifth film in five years, and Disney has promised to apply the brakes to avoid fatigue.

The company’s release schedule has untitled Star Wars films listed for 2022, 2024 and 2026, and a director is yet to be revealed after Game Of Thrones’ D.B. Weiss and David Benioff left the project.

Of the films, Disney CEO Bob Iger claimed: ‘We’re in no rush. We know that fans will want another film, or another few films, and we’ll make them.’
