This is the startling moment a mother and baby had a lucky escape when they fell into a puddle that went up to her neck.

The unnamed mother can be seen getting out of a car with her son in her arms and walking towards the pavement in the Peerzadiguda area of Hyderbad in India on March 19.

She stepped into what looked like a shallow puddle – but it was actually a deep pit filled with water, which had been dug as part of roadworks.

The shocking video shows her plummet into the hole until she is neck-deep in water.

The brave mother manages to hold her baby above her head, and he is rescued by shocked onlookers who then pull out the woman.

Local sources said the pit was filled with water after heavy rain and it looked like a normal puddle. 

Reports said that luckily the mother and son were not seriously injured in the incident.

A car can then be seen approaching the area and there do not appear to be any signs indicating to road users that there is a huge hole in the road.
