Blues captain Jake Trbojevic has become a meme on social media following his reaction to a ‘hipster’ version of the national anthem.
Ahead of Game One of 2024’s State of Origin, Australian Idol winner Dylan Wright delivered a stripped-down rendition of Advance Australia Fair to a packed house at Accor Stadium in Sydney.
As the camera panned across the NSW and Queensland teams, Trbojevic, 30, appeared to be quite unimpressed with Wright’s interpretation of the anthem written by Scottish-born Australian composer Peter Dodds.
His expression soon became a meme on social media, with viewers posting a screenshot of the moment from the broadcast along with what they thought Jake was thinking.
‘Jake is all of us watching that bloke butcher the anthem,’ wrote one commenter on X, formerly known as Twitter.

‘His face during the anthem got me good!’ quipped another.
‘I could see Jake T cringe when [Wright] tried to hold the long high half yell,’ commented one more.
Other X-users sounded off about the ‘diabolical’ version of the national anthem.
‘What is this the Hipster Anthem? Diabolical,’ wrote one viewer.
‘Nah f*ck off with this national anthem. You can’t do a cover of the anthem,’ added another.
‘Not a fan of artists putting their spin on the national anthem. Either sing it properly, or just play the Julie Anthony recording,’ commented one more.
