ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith appeared open to a run at President of the United States when asked on a recent episode of The View.
Smith, the longtime host of the sports debate show ‘First Take’, appeared on the morning talk show that appears on sister network ABC.
When asked if he thinks we would be qualified for the office, Smith initially said, ‘Hell no’ before expanding.
‘Let me say this, I have said this on many occasions. The answer would be “Hell no”, because I like my life – I’m living a pretty good life,’ Smith said.
‘But I must confess, I wish I could debate some of these guys. I’d love to be on a debate stage with these guys with the presidency on the line.’
ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith revealed that he’d be interested in running for President
He continued: ‘And I’m half joking, but I kinda mean it. I have no desire to be a congressional figure or a senator.
‘But if you came to me and you told me I had a legitimate shot to win the presidency of the United States of America, I would definitely consider it.’
As for which of the two American political parties he would choose, Smith also answered that
‘I would be an independent because I don’t like either side and I’m not gonna be bought and paid for. I’m gonna do what’s in the best interests of the American people, whatever that may be, and I’m gonna make my decisions and I’m gonna stand on it.’
When panelist Whoppi Goldberg pointed out that independent candidates often get swayed by special interests, Smith responded, ‘That’s because they’re at the mercy of the pocketbooks on either side because they know it takes money to campaign, run the commercials… look at what Trump did in terms of the commercials that he was running against Kamala Harris.
‘He spent millions upon millions of dollars doing what he did – and you need the money in order to be known.
‘But if I didn’t need it? If it was just us going on a debate stage and let’s talk about the issues that effect America? Name a time and place and I’ll show up.’
Whatever a presidency that Smith would run would be an interesting proposition to say the least – but no one on social media took him seriously.
But not everybody is on board with the idea of a Stephen A. Smith presidency it seems
‘Dude is on the weeeeed,’ wrote one user on Twitter – mocking a famous rant from the reporter.
‘If that’s what it takes to get his dumb a** off ESPN all day then let’s f***ing do it,’ said another.
Others posted various clips of viral Stephen A. moments, such as his Kwame Brown rant (He’s a bonafide scrub, he can’t play!) and his reaction to the Knicks drafting Kristaps Porzingis (We’ve been hoodwinked, bamboozled, led astray, run amok, and flat out deceived).
But it appeared that at least a few users entertained the idea.
‘it boggles my mind that people are treating this as a crazy thing to say given who this country just elected for a second time. there is not a single person in the country who could say this and sound insane to me now,’ read one user.
Another said, ‘stephen a starts talking about price gouging, student debt, rent control, and nationalized healthcare & i promise you i’d knock on some doors lmao.’
