Former Liverpool star Steven Gerrard has come under fire from fans after posting about an extravagant gift for his daughter on Instagram.

Father-of-four Gerrard gave his six-year-old daughter Lourdes an 18-carat rose gold iPad for her birthday.

The 37-year-old published three photographs of the £1,455 device to his 6.5million followers complete with the caption: ‘Thanks @idesigngold for Lourdes 18k rose gold iPad with deep engraving check out there new website www.idesigngold.’ [sic]

The message on the gadget reads: ‘Happy 6th Birthday Lourdes. Lots of love Mum & Dad X’.

Instagram user Edwa62I said: ‘[I] really like this couple and always thought he was very down to earth! But this is just so ridiculous for a 6 year old. What will she expect to receive next year? And why broadcast it all over Instagram?’

 Adam Calver also responded to a critic, saying: ‘You narrow minded b*****d. He has his own foundation to raise money for disadvantaged kids! Can’t put his money into every cause to make everyone else happy.’
