Steven Gerrard has revealed that he would prefer to see Manchester United face Manchester City in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

The Liverpool legend believes the all-English tie would be ‘dead exciting’ if Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho went toe-to-toe in Europe’s elite club competition.

The tie would also mean Gerrard’s former side would avoid the Premier League leaders in the last eight, potentially paving way for an easier route into the semis.

When asked on BT Sport what matches he’d like to see created in next Friday’s quarter-final draw, Gerrard said: ‘I was thinking more Man Utd vs Man City. That would be dead exciting.’

Following Tottenham’s elimination from the competition at the hands of Juventus on Wednesday night, Gerrard was asked whether he would like to see Liverpool take on the Italian champions.

‘Yes I’d be happy with that. I think Liverpool can hurt them and score against them. You know Juventus have got that know how which would concern me.

‘From Liverpool’s point of view, I would be confident against anyone. Over two legs, they can be strong.’

Jurgen Klopp’s side cruised into the last eight with a 5-0 win over Porto while City stumbled through after losing 2-1 at home to Basel on Wednesday.

United are set to face Sevilla next Tuesday with all to play for following a goalless stalemate in the first leg.
