Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has offered his sympathy to Bayern Munich goalkeeper Sven Ulreich following his disastrous error against Real Madrid.

Bayern were knocked out at the Champions League semi-final stage to Madrid after drawing 2-2 at the Bernabeu on Tuesday night, losing 4-3 on aggregate.

And Ulreich will be having nightmares after his costly error for Madrid’s second proved the difference in the mouth-watering tie between the two European giants.

With the scoreline at 1-1, Ulreich, who has replaced the injured Manuel Neuer since September, failed to clear his lines after receiving a back pass from Corentin Tolisso.

The German initially appeared to go and pick the ball up with his hands before realising the circumstances and seeing the ball slide past him as he slipped over while trying to rearrange his feet, with Benzema on hand to tap home his second goal of the night.

And speaking following the game, Gerrard offered his support to Ulreich after drawing on his own experience of slipping at Anfield back in 2014 against Chelsea to allow Demba Ba to score, which effectively cost Liverpool the title.

Speaking on BT Sport after the game, Gerrard said: ‘I’ve been there when you lose footing at vital moment, a cruel way to lose a football match.

‘Neuer hammers that 70, 80 yards down field.’

Following the final whistle on Tuesday, Ulreich was clearly ruing his mistake as he was seen sitting in anguish on the Bernabeu turf.
