A speeding driver bolted from a stolen Mercedes and tried to swim across a river to escape police following a high speed chase that ended in an eight vehicle pile-up.
The car thief was finally arrested as he attempted his aquatic escape in the River Ouse in Lewes, East Sussex following the desperate bid to evade police.
Officers chased the rogue driver on the A23 and A27 who was in a stolen Mercedes that he used to ram pursuit cars during the getaway.

Two other men ran from the car which had been reported stolen from south-west London after it crashed near the Southerham roundabout just after 4pm today.
The unlikely swimmer’s bid for freedom was thwarted when police waited for him on the opposite bank, a Sussex police spokesperson said.He was taken to hospital under arrest.
One passenger from the car suffered an arm injury in the collision and was taken to hospital.

The driver of another vehicle involved in the collision sustained a suspected broken collarbone and was also taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton.
Police had been following the stolen Mercedes from Pyecombe on the A23 before the car turned on to the A27.
Police said it rammed a police car at the A23 to A27 interchange before continuing on towards the eastern end of Lewes by-pass where it crashed, damaging a number of other vehicles.

The three men were chased on foot and arrested while the A27 was closed in both directions after the people ran from the car police had been following.

Sergeant Stacey Ellott from the Surrey and Sussex roads policing unit said: ‘We are aware that this is causing considerable disruption and we are working as swiftly as possible to reopen the road, but this will take some time and we thank people for their patience.’
