On Thursday, Trump announced in a tweet that Sanders would be stepping down at the end of the month.

The response to Sanders’ departure has been largely negative on social media, where critics accused her of repeating and defending the president even when it was clear he had lied.

Travis Allen tweeted: ‘I won’t believe that Sarah Huckabee Sanders is leaving the White House until she repeatedly denies it and then refuses to answer questions about it.’

Supporters of the president praised Sanders.

Newt Gingrich, a former House speaker and advisor to Trump, tweeted: ‘Sarah Sanders has a great future.

‘She has proven her courage, her hard work, and her intelligence.

‘She might well become the second Huckabee to occupy the Governor’s mansion in Little Rock.’

Sebastian Gorka, a former White House official, tweeted: ‘As White House Press Secretaries go, there is no doubt that Sarah Huckabee Sanders has established a name for herself as one of the greatest in recent memory.’

Sanders will leave after two-and-a-half years at the White House, where she clashed with the press, scaled back briefings, appeared in the Mueller report and carried forward the president’s combative posture with the media.

‘After 3 1/2 years, our wonderful Sarah Huckabee Sanders will be leaving the White House at the end of the month and going home to the Great State of Arkansas,’ Trump tweeted.

‘She is a very special person with extraordinary talents, who has done an incredible job! I hope she decides to run for Governor of Arkansas – she would be fantastic. Sarah, thank you for a job well done!’

Trump hailed her at the White House minutes after the departure announcement.

He called her ‘a person, a friend, a woman, a great, great magnificent person actually, named Sarah Huckabee Sanders. And she’s very popular. She’s very popular,’ ending the tribute by saying: ‘She is a warrior.’

‘She’s done an incredible job. We’ve been through a lot together. She’s tough and she’s good,’ Trump gushed.

‘If we can get her to run for governor of Arkansas. I think we can get her to do that. I’m trying to get her to do that.’

‘I want to thank you for an outstanding job,’ he said, kissing her check.

Sanders didn’t rule out a political future in Arkansas during an afternoon chat with reporters in her West Wing office.

‘I’ve learned a long time ago never to rule anything out,’ she said. ‘I do look forward to going back home.’

The world first learned of Daniels last year, when it was learned that she was paid $130,000 as part of a hush money agreement to prevent her from revealing an alleged affair with the president more than 10 years ago.

She filed a lawsuit in March 2018 asking the courts to invalidate the nondisclosure agreement, which she signed in the weeks before the 2016 presidential election.

Trump has denied having an affair with Daniels.

In March, a federal judge in Los Angeles dismissed the lawsuit brought by Daniels to end the hush-money agreement she made with Trump.

U.S. District Judge James Otero dismissed the lawsuit because Trump and his former lawyer Michael Cohen have agreed not to enforce the nondisclosure agreement against Daniels, court documents showed.

Cohen has said the agreement, under which Daniels was paid $130,000, was struck to help Trump capture the White House.

Daniels’ former lawyer, Michael Avenatti, whose work on her case gave him considerable media exposure, has been charged with ripping off her as well as other ex-clients.

Avenatti, who was Daniels’ lawyer and helped set the political stage for her high-profile crusade against Trump, is accused of misappropriating funds belonging to the ex adult film star amounting to nearly $300,000, prosecutors announced.

The 48-year-old is accused of forging Daniels’ signature which meant two payments of $148,750 were sent to a bank account under his control, which he then used for personal expenditure while lying to his client about the whereabouts of the money.

Avenatti was also indicted for his alleged attempted extortion of the sports apparel brand Nike, which he said in recent tweets that he expected imminently and looked forward to clearing his name in court, having been accused in March.

Avenatti was arrested in March after federal prosecutors said he threatened to expose that Nike improperly paid high school basketball players unless the company paid him up to $25 million.

TRUMP SAYS GOODBYE TO ‘WARRIOR’ SARAH SANDERS

The president praised his outgoing press secretary and gave her the stage during a White House event on June 13, 2019. Here is what they said.

DONALD TRUMP:  ‘I thought maybe I’d just take a moment. So at the White House, and been with me now three and a half years, before I won, before the election, is a person, a friend, a woman, a great great magnificent person actually, named Sarah Huckabee Sanders. And she’s very popular. She’s very popular.’

‘And she’s done an incredible job. We’ve been through a lot together and she’s tough. But she’s good. you know, you also have tough and bad, right? She’s tough and she’s good. She’s great.

‘And she’s going to be leaving the service of her country and she’s going to be going, I guess you could say private sector, but I hope she’s going to – she comes from a great state, Arkansas. That was a state I won by a lot, so I like it, right?

‘But we love Arkansas and she’s going to be going back to Arkansas with her great family, her husband, who’s a fantastic guy, and her great family. And I don’t know, Phil and folks, if we can get her to run for the governor of Arkansas, I think she’ll do very well. I’m trying to get her to do that.

‘But I just saw her in the room and I really wanted to call her up. She’s a special person, a very, very fine woman. She has been so great, she has such heart. She’s strong, but with great, great heart. And I want to thank you for a great, great job.’

SARAH SANDERS: ‘Thank you very much. I’ll try not to get emotional because I know crying can make us look weak sometimes, right? This has been the honor of a lifetime, the opportunity of a lifetime. I couldn’t be prouder to have had the opportunity to serve my country, and particularly for this president. He has accomplished so much in these two and a half years and it’s truly been something I will treasure forever.

‘It’s one of the greatest jobs I could ever have. I’ve loved every minute. Even the hard minutes. I’ve loved it. I love the president. I love the team that I’ve had the opportunity to work for. The president is surrounded by some of the most incredible and talented people you could ever imagine.

‘And it’s truly the most special experience. The only one I can think of that might top it just a little bit is the fact that I’m a mom. I have three amazing kids and I’m going to spend a little more time with them.

‘And in the meantime I’m going to continue to be one of the most outspoken and loyal supporters of the president and his agenda, and I know he’s going to have an incredible six more years and get a lot more done, like what we’re here to celebrate today.

‘And I don’t want to take away from that, so I certainly want to get back to the tremendous thing that the people behind me have done. And thank you so much, Mr. President. It’s truly an honor.’

DONALD TRUMP: ‘Great person. Great person. Thank you, Sarah.

‘She’s a warrior. You guys know what warriors are, right? You’re warriors. We’re all warriors. We have no choice. We have to be warriors in this world. But she is a warrior. Thank you, Sarah, very much.’
