Strictly Ballroom star Gia Carides hints the Baz Luhrmann hit could be getting a sequel 32 years after it became a smash hit: ‘It could be extraordinary’

Gia Carides rose to fame in the 1992 Baz Luhrmann-directed romantic comedy Strictly Ballroom.

And the actress said she is more than ready to star in a long awaited sequel, hinting that it could be on the cards.

‘I would be completely thrilled,’ the 59-year-old tells Stellar Magazine of the prospect of a follow up film.

‘I think it could be extraordinary – but whether Baz wants to do that or not is another question’ she added.

The actress says that despite the 32 years that have passed since the film debuted, she is still recognised all the time.

‘It’s really sweet to have a 20-something barista serving you coffee stop and say, “Excuse me, were you in Strictly Ballroom?”‘ she told the magazine.

Gia played Liz Holt in the dancing epic, which was a box office hit in Australia and overseas.

In the comedy, Paul Mercurio stars as Scott Hastings, an Australian ballroom dancer who pairs with beginner-dancer Fran (Tara Morice) after his maverick style earns him the disdain of his conservative colleagues.

Together they set out to win the National Championship dancing title and show the Ballroom Confederation that they’re wrong when they say, ‘there are no new steps!’

Dancer and television host Sonia Kruger was also a ballroom adviser in the movie and helped teach her fellow cast members how to dance.

Sonia has of course moved on to a very successful TV hosting career after rising to fame in her role as Tina Sparkle in the film.

Paul Mercurio meanwhile has pursued a career in Victorian state politics.

The 61-year-old was elected as a councillor for the Mornington Peninsula Shire in 2020.

The Neighbours star was also Labor’s candidate in the seat of Hastings on the Mornington Peninsula for the November 2022 state election.

Luhrmann worked on recreating Strictly Ballroom as a stage musical in 2018, with it debuting in Sydney.
