Strictly Come Dancing’s Karen Hauer is reportedly ‘absolutely gutted’ to have lost out to Katya Jones in being coupled up with Nicola Adams for the show’s first same-sex pairing.

The professional dancer, 38, was said to have been ‘desperate’ to team up with boxer Nicola, 37, and make history on the BBC show, with Karen even tipped as bookies favourite.

However, she’s apparently been dealt a crushing blow as her fellow dancer Katya, 31, has bagged the coveted role as Nicola’s professional partner.

Crushed: Strictly Come Dancing’s Karen Hauer is reportedly ‘absolutely gutted’ to have lost out to Katya Jones in being coupled up with Nicola Adams for the show’s first same-sex pairing

The news that Katya and Nicola are partnering up was seemingly revealed on Tuesday as they were seen leaving filming together – though the official couples have yet to be confirmed.

A source revealed to The Sun: ‘Karen is absolutely gutted. For ages she was the favourite to get the nod to dance with Nicola and had even gone as far as planning out routines for them to perform.’

They went on to say that the duo had got to ‘know each other’ quite well and had become ‘good friends’.

The insider continued: ‘She’d not only got her heart set on dancing with Nicola, she had prepared herself for it mentally. So for them to suddenly decide to pick Katya was a massive blow.’

The Venezuelan beauty had long been tipped as favourite to pair up with Nicola, but it’s said that producers opted to go with Katya instead, believing she’ll have ‘perfect chemistry’ with the boxer.

The source added to the publication: ‘Dancing with Nicola is the job all the professionals wanted. It is the most sought-after position in showbiz right now. So for Katya to get the nod has underlined her as the queen of the show.’

They added that the Russian stunner is ‘absolutely delighted’ at the news and cannot keep the smile off her face.

MailOnline have contacted a Strictly representative for comment.

Karen’s disappointment comes after she was touted by bookmakers Ladbrokes as the firm favourite to team up with Nicola, with her odds coming in at 5/4.

She battled it out with Katya Jones who was at 2/1, while Oti Mabuse came in at 3/1.

A source told Express.co.uk: ‘The fingers are pointing towards fan favourite Karen and Nicola being paired together to make Strictly history.’

They continued: ‘It goes without saying all of the female professionals would love to partner with Nicola this year.

‘It’s the most sought after position in showbiz right now and it looks like Strictly stalwarts Karen, Katya and Oti are the front runners.’

A Strictly representative declined to comment when approached by MailOnline.

Karen, who recently split from partner David Webb, previously expressed her desire to be partnered with a female contestant.

She said to The Sun on Sunday: ‘It’s a beautiful way to showcase emotion on stage and I’d definitely like to do it.

‘I’ve danced with women a lot over the years, so I feel very comfortable about it. All the dancers would love to see it on the show.’

Her thoughts echoed that of Katya, who previously said she was desperate to be coupled with Nicola and declared she would ‘love’ to be a part of the historic show’s first same-sex pairing.

Earlier this year, Katya said: ‘I would love to dance with a woman on the show.

‘I think creatively it would be really interesting and I love coming up with new ideas for stuff.’

Nicola has also shared her excitement with dancing with another woman as she explained: ‘It’s amazing to be a part of the movement for change, diversity and breaking boundaries in the entertainment industry.’

Speaking live from her home on BBC Breakfast last month, Nicola said of her groundbreaking all-female pairing: ‘It’s really important, it’s a big step for the show as well. It’s nice to see we’ve been able to move on and I just can’t wait to get some dancing done really.’

Revealing she approached Strictly with the idea for a same-sex pairing, Nicola explained: ‘I asked the show about it. They wanted to know if I wanted to be on the show and I said “yeah I’ll do it but I want to dance with another female dance partner”.’

Strictly Come Dancing returns to BBC One for the launch show on October 17.
