Stuart Pearce appointed as David Moyes’ West Ham assistant

Stuart Pearce, Alan Irvine and Billy McKinlay were appointed as members of West Ham’s coaching staff on Sunday night, joining the club under new manager David Moyes.

The former Manchester City and Nottingham Forest manager Pearce, who made 50 appearances for West Ham between 1999 and 2001, is expected to be in the dug-out for West Ham’s next game — away to Watford on Sunday.

Pearce will link up with West Ham’s squad at their training ground on Monday and said he was looking forward to the challenge.

Former Manchester City boss Stuart Pearce has been appointed by West Ham’s David Moyes

‘I’m really looking forward to coming in and getting involved’, Pearce said in a statement on West Ham’s official website.

‘The opportunity to work with David Moyes, who I have respected greatly over the years, was a big factor, as was having previously played for the club.

‘It’s been many years since I was there for a couple of seasons, but I really enjoyed my time. The West Ham fans were fantastic to me and I’m looking forward to coming back.

‘It’s tough times at the moment but it’s a fantastic opportunity for me. I’m really excited by the challenge.

Pearce also previously managed the England Under 21s and led the Young Lions to the final of the Euros with current West Ham skipper Mark Noble as his captain.

Ex-West Brom boss Irvine meanwhile links up with Moyes once again after previous spells with his fellow Scot at Preston and Everton.

Irvine has already been assisting Moyes during his first week in charge of the Hammers and revealed it was the sixth job offer he has received after leaving Norwich at the end of last season.

‘I’m delighted to be given this opportunity and am really looking forward to the challenge ahead,’ Irvine told West Ham’s website.

‘I obviously know David well from our time together at Preston and Everton, and it was certainly a big attraction to work with him again, as was the thought of coming to a club like West Ham.

‘This is the sixth job I have been offered since leaving Norwich at the end of last season – some of which were very attractive – but it’s the first one that has persuaded me to accept, so I hope that says a lot about how excited I am to be here.

‘The prospect of working in the Premier League, at a great club, and alongside David, meant that it was an opportunity I couldn’t resist, and I hope that I can now make a positive contribution.’

Former Watford manager Billy McKinlay has also been appointed as a third assistant after leaving his position at Sunderland.

It means Moyes will have three former managers on his coaching staff as he attempts to steer West Ham clear of the Premier League relegation zone.

Moyes was appointed on a deal until the end of the season to replace Slaven Bilic, who was dismissed following the 4-1 loss to Liverpool last time out which saw the club fall to 18th in the table.
