Meliha Kaya, 21, will stand trial next year accused of killing her teenage sister in a horror car smash

A university student accused of killing her teenage sister in a horror car smash will stand trial in June next year.

Meliha Kaya, 21, was allegedly driving a Mini Cooper dangerously when she careered over a three foot wall into a tree in South Woodford, east London.

Her 16 year-old sister Elif Kaya, a star ‘A’ level student who was sitting in the front passenger seat, died at the scene in Chigwell Road the early hours of February 13 2016.

Meliha, a criminology student at Middlesex University, suffered life threatening injuries and underwent plastic surgery to her face after the accident, and her friend Ayla Osman, 21, was also seriously injured.

She was charged with causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

Meliha will stand trial on 18 June next year alongside Jordash Graham, 23, who is said to have driven a Ford Focus dangerously in High Road and Chigwell Road before the crash.

Both appeared at the Old Bailey for a trial preparation hearing but did not enter pleas to the charges.

They will return to court on 23 February next year.

Elif was studying her A Levels at Epping Forest College and dreamed of becoming a barrister.

Her mother Demet Kaya, 36, said after the accident: ‘She was an angel. She was a lovely daughter. She wanted to be a barrister and was doing so well.

‘This is just so unfair. She was a very fair child, very confident and strong character. She was so intelligent and worked very hard.’

Meliha Kaya, of Woodford, east London, and Graham, of Leytonstone, east London, are both on conditional bail.
