A 12-year-old boy was left with a fractured skull after he was ‘body slammed’ by a Florida school behavioral interventionist.
Jarvis Delon West, 28, was arrested and charged with suspicion of failure to report child neglect and neglect of a child resulting in great bodily harm in relation to the incident that took place on Febuary 11.
West is a behavioral interventionist at AMIkids Pinellas, a private non-profit school for at-risk children in St. Petersburg, and was working as a supervisor at the facility. He was not the man who ‘body slammed’ the student, according to local authorities.
Pinellas Park police say that on Febuary 11, ‘the victim … was reported to be ‘acting out’ during lunch.
‘A behavioral interventionist (BI) redirected the student to the ‘Room of Opportunity’ where a physical altercation transpired,’ the police statement added, according to NBC News. ‘As a result of the altercation, the victim started to vomit and it is believed that he lost consciousness on more than one occasion.’
Instead of immediately getting the boy help, police say that he was still under adult supervision for two more hours before he was sent home.

He was given a ‘trash can on the [school] bus in the event that the student vomited,’ according to police.
Police describe the man who body-slammed the child as being 5’7″ and approximately 300lbs. The 12-year-old is said to be 100lbs.
The boy’s mother was not initially told about the incident and allowed her son to stay home, believing he had the flu.
He was eventually take to All Children’s Hospital and it was then that doctors learned that ‘he had suffered a fractured skull, has two subdural hematomas and a brain bleed.’

Authorities linked all the injuries to the incident at the school.
‘Another co-worker body slammed the boy,’ Pinellas County Sheriff’s Deputy Travis Sibley said. He added that West ‘should have been the one who called it in. But he didn’t, contributing to the child neglect.’
A rep for the school said that last week’s incident was ‘unacceptable’ and said that multiple employees have been suspended without pay, included the person involved.
‘We are cooperating fully with the authorities,’ AMIkids spokesman Joseph Gallina said. ‘This is unacceptable behavior. We strive to make a safe environment for our students.’
