Succession Season 4 Episode 3: Connor Roy ties the knot with Willa

Connor Roy (Alan Ruck) ties the knot with fiancee Willa (Justine Lupe) in the third episode of the fourth and final season of HBO’s Succession.

Willa seemed to be having second thoughts about tying the knot with the eccentric Connor, the oldest of Logan Roy’s (Brian Cox) children.

The trailer revealed that Connor was ‘nervous’ about whether or not his father Logan would actually show up at the wedding.

Meanwhile, Roman (Kieran Culkin) appears to be having second thoughts about re-teaming with his father Logan.

Logan summoned Roman to his home at the end of last week’s episode and told his son that he needed him to help finish the deal with Lukas Matsson (Alexander Skarsgard).

The episode begins with Roman being driven as he gets a call from Logan, who says he thinks Roman should come see the suite.

Roman says that it’s Connor’s wedding and Roman wonders if he’ll be going to the wedding, but Logan isn’t sure.

Logan tells Roman that he’s thinking about firing Gerri (J. Smith Cameron), asking Roman to tell her.

‘I mean, you are with me? You weren’t just f***ing me around,’ Logan asks, as Roman insists he is, with Roman telling him to tell Gerri today.

Greg gets a call from Tom, who tells him that Logan finds Greg, ‘visually aggravating’ as Tom says he has new ‘little Greg’s.’

Willa tells a woman that the wedding wasn’t quite was they expected, though she doesn’t specify.

Logan asks Tom what he has on Matsson, with Tom saying he’s playing hardball but he thinks the deal will still happen.

‘I think today is the day I talk to Cyd and Gerri, find out when he’s done it,’ Logan tells Tom.

‘Clean out the stalls, aggressive re-focus,’ Logan says as he boards his private plane with Tom as the title sequence begins.

Shiv goes and talks to Roman, who says the wedding is a ‘sham’ and the ‘death of romance.’

Tom calls Roman and asks if he’s told Gerri yet, but he says he hasn’t and she hasn’t arrived yet, but she’s here with her husband.

Roman tells Gerri they should have a chat once they set sail, revealing it’s a message from Logan.

Gerri realizes that she’s being let go and she’s clearly upset, stating she danced them through a thunderstorm without getting wet before storming away.

Roman calls Logan and says it was, ‘horrible’ with Gerri, adding he’s not totally OK with him using him like that.

Kendall (Jeremy Strong) arrives as the board the boat, finding Willa, who says Connor is ‘fixated’ on the cake, saying it’s a ‘looney cake.’

Kendall says, ‘When they told Connor’s mom was getting, you know…Taken into– into mental health care, they gave him cake.’

‘Dad and whoever, just to calm him down. You know, dab of sugar, bite of cake. So, he was eating Victoria sponge for, like, a week straight,’ Kendall added.

Greg wants to congratulate Kendall and Shiv but they blow him off as they go find Connor.

Connor says that Logan will pop by dockside and he wants them to stay topside when he gets there.

Shiv says they should tell Connor that Logan isn’t really coming as Roman gets a call from Tom, who says their dad is ‘very sick,’ but the call keeps breaking up.

Tom says it’s ‘very very bad’ adding he was ‘short of breath and went into the bathroom’ and someone ‘broke in’ to get him.

Tom says they are doing ‘chest compressions’ which freaks out Kendall and Roman, as Frank says he’s ‘not in good shape.’

Frank says he doesn’t think he’s breathing as Kendall and Roman freak out some more.

Tom says Roman can speak into his ear right now as Roman takes the phone off speaker and tells him he will be OK, telling him he’s a ‘very good dad.’

Roman takes the phone and gives it to Kendall, who doesn’t quite know what to say either, telling him to ‘hang in there.’

‘We love you dad. We love you. I love you dad, I do,’ Kendall says, adding he ‘can’t forgive you but it’s OK and I love you,’ Kendall says.

Tom asks if Shiv is there as Kendall goes to get Shiv, giving her an update on his condition as they walk back upstairs… as Roman says, ‘They think dad died.’

Shiv breaks down in tears as Kendall asks Tom to put Shiv on as she talks to him but no one knows if he’s dead.

Back on the plane, they’re still giving him chest compressions and Tom doesn’t know if he’s alive or not as chest compressions continue.

A tearful Shiv tells Logan she loves him, telling him not to go now, as we see Logan laying motionless and shirtless as chest compressions continue.

Tom asks Shiv if she wants to stay on as she breaks down in tears again as Roman hugs her and Roman asks what ‘precisely is happening right now.’

Tom adds they are still doing chest compressions, saying the plane people are lovely and good people.

Kendall asks if Logan is OK but Tom says he’s not, saying his breathing has stopped for awhile.

Tom says they are turning around and heading back as Kendall asks to speak to the flight deck.

The kids asks for their dad’s doctor and Kendall calls Jess and tells her to get a conference call together.

Kendall calls Frank and asks to speak with the pilot but Frank says he can’t speak to the pilot because he’s flying the plane.

‘Is he gone, Frank? I mean… is he gone?’ Kendall asks Frank, but Frank says he doesn’t know.

‘I don’t wanna bulls**t you, Ken. I think he went. I think he’s gone,’ Frank says, as Kendall thanks Frank and hangs up.

Kendall goes back to Shiv and Roman, telling them that Frank thinks he’s gone as Shiv asks why they didn’t get her sooner.

While, for a majority of the series, the Roy children have been at odds with each other, the last few episodes of Season 3 found them finally joining forces to stop their father Logan from selling off the family’s media conglomerate.

Little did they know that family black sheep Tom Wambsgans (Matthew McFadyen) betrayed his own wife Shiv and gave Logan a heads up on what they were doing, giving him enough to remove their power to block the impending sale.

The final shots of Season 3 seemed to indicate that Shiv realized her husband betrayed her, though it’s unclear how that will play out in Season 4.

Succession creator Jesse Armstrong first confirmed that Season 4 will be the end of the show in a wide-ranging interview with The New Yorker, where he was asked why he decided to confirm the final season before it debuted.

‘One, we could have said it as soon as I sort of decided, almost when we were writing it, which I think would be weird and perverse,’ Armstrong began.

‘We could have said it at the end of the season. I quite like that idea, creatively, because then the audience is just able to enjoy everything as it comes, without trying to figure things out, or perceiving things in a certain way once they know it’s the final season,’ he added.

‘But, also, the countervailing thought is that we don’t hide the ball very much on the show. I feel a responsibility to the viewership, and I personally wouldn’t like the feeling of, “Oh, that’s it, guys. That was the end.” I wouldn’t like that in a show. I think I would like to know it is coming to an end,’ he clarified.

He added, ‘And, also, there’s a bunch of prosaic things, like it might be weird for me and the cast as we do interviews. It’s pretty definitively the end, so then it just might be uncomfortable having to sort of dissemble like a politician for ages about it. Hopefully, the show is against bullshit, and I wouldn’t like to be bulls****ing anyone when I was talking about it.’
