Sunrise crew member insults host David Koch’s ‘shocker’ tie just before he goes live on air in awkward behind-the-scenes clip

A Sunrise crew member has been busted on camera insulting David ‘Kochie’ Koch’s on-air outfit.

On Monday morning, Floor manager Mitchell Healey called Kochie’s tie a ‘shocker’ right before he went live to air.

The bizarre moment was posted on TikTok, and showed the breakfast show host, 66, awkwardly ‘thanking’ Mitchell for his insult.

The video began with Kochie and his co-host Natalie Barr standing on set waiting for their Melbourne anchor to finish his segment.

Just as he threw to the pair, Floor Manager Mitch said to Kochie: ‘That tie is an absolute shocker, mate. But it’s Monday. You can recover.’

There was a long, awkward silence as Kochie and Natalie were unable to say anything while the camera panned to them.

The television personality’s next line on the prompter was ‘Thanks, Mitch’, forcing Kochie to appear grateful for the insult as Healey snickered behind the camera.

Kochie is said to be planning his retirement for the end of 2024 after 20 years on the air.

His departure will be a gradual one as he reduces the number of his days on air over the next two years until his contract expires.

This is so viewers don’t get ‘spooked’ by his immediate departure.

Kochie signed a contract extension in October locking him in until the end of 2024, but has negotiated for ‘greater flexibility’ in his schedule.

He inked the deal at a meeting with Seven Network CEO James Warburton, during which he expressed his interest in retiring.

Mr Warburton was able to convince Kochie to put off his retirement plans for another two years, but agreed to draw up a contract allowing the long-serving anchor ‘to take more breaks from the show according to his requirements’, reported The Australian.

Olympian-turned-broadcaster Matt Shirvington, 44, is expected to replace the long-time anchor after impressing network executives when he filled in co-anchor six weeks ago when Koch was on leave.
