Sunrise host Natalie Barr denies rumours of a ‘feud’ with ex-host Melissa Doyle and behind the scenes tension on the breakfast show

Natalie Barr has addressed rumours of behind the scenes tension on Sunrise and a reported ‘feud’ between herself and Melissa Doyle.

The TV presenter, 55, has firmly shut down any claims that there is any bad blood between herself and former Sunrise host Melissa, 54.

Speaking on Stellar’s Something To Talk About podcast, she said she normally tries to ‘ignore’ rumours of any tension on the Seven breakfast show.

She insisted that she has never witnessed any ‘catfights’ on the Seven breakfast TV show and denied any tension between herself and Melissa.

She said: ‘I basically got along with everyone. I can’t remember any catfights in the Sunrise office, whatever a catfight is, I can’t remember any!’

Natalie also shut down claims she was left feeling ‘overlooked’ when Sam Armytage replaced Melissa as the Sunrise co-host in 2013, despite having filled in on the show herself.

Natalie – who went on to replace Sam when she resigned in 2021 – said she never thought she could do the job at the time and was thrilled upon Sam’s appointment.

When asked about the rumours, she explained: ‘I remember going for dinner with the boss of the show and Sam, right after she announced it, having a glass of wine and saying ‘Cheers, you’re the best person for this job and I honestly believe that’.’

‘I didn’t think I was ready for the job, hand on heart, I didn’t think I could do the job then. I thought Sam was the best person for the job, and she was at that time,’ she went on.

‘It’s weird the way no-one believes you when you say things like that, because you can’t say it often enough.’

Natalie admitted she was even ‘hesitant’ to take on the hosting job when Sam left years later in 2021, revealing she had to be ‘talked into it’ because she was ‘nervous’.

‘When Sam left, even then I was hesitant, I don’t know whether it’s something in my DNA that I had trouble putting my hand up,’ she said.

‘When the boss called me and said, ‘Do you want it?’ We were sort of talking around the issue and he stopped me and said, ‘You sound like you don’t want this job. You sound like you’re talking yourself out of it’.

‘Something struck me and I got cold sweats and I was um-ing and ah-ing, and he said, ‘It’s OK. I’ve had jobs like this where I’ve been nervous and second-guessing myself. You can still do the job’.

‘And I thought, maybe it’s OK. Maybe I can do it. But I had to be talked into it even then.

‘So I’d sat at my desk, watched two women do it brilliantly, and I’m still second-guessing myself. I don’t know whether it’s a woman thing. I know it’s a me thing, but that’s honestly how I felt.’

Natalie confessed that it then still took her around a year in the hosting job to feel totally comfortable due to her nerves.

She has now become a household name on the show and recently gave an insight into her daily routine while filming.

Earlier this week, she appeared in a video on the show’s official Instagram page to detail her average day.

Natalie shared she is out of bed by 2:45am each morning to present the high-rating program.

She went on to explain she gets breakfast brought to her each day on set, but admitted they are sometimes too busy to eat straight away.

‘We actually get breakfast brought to us on the set… and then we were so busy we didn’t have time to eat it at 6:30am so I ate it at 8:30am .. so cold eggs,’ she said.

Natalie admitted she is not a fan of cooking meals and prefers to bake ‘anything sweet .. biscuits, slices, cakes, I would eat sweet food all day if I could’.

She also shared that her favourite meal is ‘pancakes’, while her guilty pleasure is Caramilk chocolate.

‘I could eat a whole block, I’m not even joking and quite a big block,’ she admitted.
