Sunrise viewers were shocked to see hosts Natalie Barr and Matt ‘Shirvo’ Shirvington be rushed off live TV on Tuesday morning amid a sudden emergency.

In the middle of news reports at Brekky Central, a fire alarm blared to life and floor staff rushed to usher their top talent off the set in a state of confusion.

Thankfully, the stunned stars soon discovered they had just fallen victim to an elaborate April Fool’s prank.

It all kicked off when Nat, 57, and Shirvo, 46, were reporting on the 60-year anniversary of the Sound of Music film release.

Suddenly, Nat was cut off when an alarm rang out across the studio floor.

‘Hey, that’s a fire alarm! We might have to evacuate here,’ Shirvo said as he got to his feet.

However, Nat stayed rooted to her seat as the hosting pair looked to the floor crew for direction on what was happening.

‘Are we being told to evacuate?’ Nat said, to which Shirvo responded: ‘That’s a fire alarm, we should go.’

‘Really? Seriously? Is this going on outside the studio?’ Nat added as she continued to stay seated.

‘I don’t want to evacuate my post Shirvo, I think we should stay. I can’t see a fire.’

Finally, the floor crew gave the signal and directed both Nat and Shirvo to leave their chairs and evacuate the studio.

‘We’re still on, this has been going on outside the offices. Now, they’re telling us in the studio to go,’ Nat said as they left the stage.

However, just before they stepped outside, Nat realised it was April Fool’s Day and put the breaks on, immediately turning around to head back to her post.

‘Of course it is—we have a show to do,’ Shirvo said, laughing as the crew sprinkled the pair with gold confetti.

The Sunrise team are no strangers to huge April Fool’s Day pranks, as last year Shirvo pulled off one of the most sensational ones the studio has ever seen.

The former Olympic sprinter told his co-stars and viewers at home he was ‘coming out of retirement’ to compete in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

His stunned co-hosts Nat and Edwina Bartholomew were left blindsided by the news, only for Shirvo to eventually reveal it was a wind up.

‘Before we move on, I’ve got a little bit of news. I have requested a bit of time off. I wanted to let you guys know,’ Shirvo began, capturing the attention of his co-stars.

He went on to say he was contacted by Craig Pickering and Andrew Murphy—both renowned athletics coaches—who convinced him to ‘come out of retirement’.

‘I said “yes”. So I’m going to take a bit of time off for the Paris Olympic Games. My preparations started a couple weeks ago.

‘I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but I’ve definitely trimmed down, gotten a little faster.

‘From here on in, it really is all guns blazing as I prepare for another Olympic Games.’

Co-host Nat appeared completely stunned by the announcement as she subtly glanced to the camera crew for confirmation.

‘This is very exciting. This is very, very exciting,’ she said, as she attempted to take the shocking news in her stride.

Shirvo kept the joke going for a moment longer, turning to the crew to ask: ‘Can you live without me for a couple weeks?’

As Nat and Edwina, 41, said they would happily hold down the fort, Shirvo shouted: ‘April Fools everybody!’

Nat and Edwina could then only laugh as the crew began applauding Shirvo’s ruse.

‘I couldn’t roll down the track right now, let alone that,’ he said, before apologising to ‘all the amazing sprinters we’ve got in this country’.

‘To think they would actually have to ask me to come out of retirement to be part of the team,’ he added.

Edwina hit back with a brutal comment, saying: ‘I don’t think they were worried for very long.’
