Sunrise weatherman Sam Mac announces break from the show to spend more time with one-year-old daughter Margot: ‘It’s been a long time coming’

Beloved Sunrise weatherman Sam Mac is taking an extended break from his role on the show to focus on full-time fatherhood.

The presenter, 42, announced on Monday he is stepping away from his on-air duties for a month while taking paternity leave.

Sam’s decision will allow his stylist partner Rebecca James, 35, to return to the workforce for the first time since giving birth.

Speaking to 7Life, Sam said he is looking forward to spending quality time with Margot, who recently started walking.

‘It’s my turn to be getting Margot up, feed her and basically becoming her personal assistant/servant,’ Sam joked.

‘Margot’s changed so much even in the past couple of months. So it’s super exciting to have some proper quality time with her.’

In an interview with Monday’s New Idea magazine, Sam also praised Sunrise for being so supportive, saying he was ‘so grateful’ for the ‘opportunity’ to take time off for his family.

‘I have worried about being one of those parents who are too busy with work to fully experience all the milestones with my child,’ he explained.

‘I absolutely love my job, but I am often away from home. I’m already noticing what I miss in Margot’s development,’ Sam admitted.

Sam will be replaced by Sunrise presenter Katie Brown during his time away.

Sam and Rebecca welcomed Margot in September 2022, two years after they started dating.

Announcing the joyous news at the time, Sam wrote: ‘This is a love I never even knew existed. I’m overwhelmed and still processing it all right now. My girls. Wow.’
