Sunrise’s David Koch ‘told off by Channel 7 for slamming AFL’

  • Sunrise host David Koch has reportedly been slammed by Channel Seven bosses
  • He spoke out against the AFL’s handling of the Sam Powell-Pepper controversy
  • Seven bosses are allegedly furious at Koch’s appearance on Channel Nine

Channel Seven has dismissed reports that David Koch will be replaced at Sunrise host after slamming his own network and appearing on rival Channel Nine’s The Footy Show.

Koch, the president of the Port Adelaide football club, recently criticised the league for its handling of the Sam Powell-Pepper controversy.

Port Adelaide star Powell-Pepper was suspended for three games after an investigation found he had behaved in a way ‘unbecoming for an AFL player by being intoxicated in a public place and by making inappropriate contact with a female’ during a night on the town earlier in April.

During a break from hosting Sunrise, Koch appeared on rival network Channel Nine’s The Footy Show, unshaven and wearing a Port Adelaide jacket.

He also spoke on Eddie McGuire’s Triple M breakfast radio show – without telling his bosses of either appearance, the Herald Sun reported.

Koch accused the AFL of using Powell-Pepper to ‘rebuild its reputation with women because of misdemeanours of its own former executives’, while also saying his club may be able to sue Channel Seven over its coverage of the story.

Despite Koch’s appearance on Channel Nine, The Footy Show lost Thursday night’s ratings battle to Channel Seven’s Front Bar.

A Channel Seven spokswoman said Koch had not been banned from appearing on The Footy Show, and confirmed there were no plans for Koch to be replaced as a host on Sunrise.

Koch is understood to be contracted to Channel Seven until at least the end of 2018.
