Sunshine Coast mum creates amazing Kmart slumber party

A devoted mum and self-professed Kmart addict put on a spectacular DIY slumber party for her son’s ninth birthday – without breaking the bank.

Vanessa Adamson, a mother-of-two from the Sunshine Coast, wanted her son Jett to celebrate his birthday in style by putting together an indoor camping experience for four of his friends.

Armed with a tight budget and an eye for detail, Vanessa shopped at Kmart and found mattresses, tents, sheets, candles, lights and trays from the department store for only $174.75 and surprised her lucky son with the elaborate display.

VANESSA’S DIY KMART SLUMBER PARTY LIST

Five Kmart Teepee Play Tents – $125

Two Kmart air mattresses – $18

Kmart battery candles – $3

Five Kmart universal trays –  $15

Five Mason jars  – $3.75

Popcorn containers – $10

 Total:  $174.75

‘The boys loved it. They all said it was the best party ever,’ Vanessa told Daily Mail Australia.

‘I had recently seen several slumber party companies starting up and advertising tents for parties. I love the idea of creating things myself and had seen the teepees at Kmart so started with those.’

Vanessa says she found several companies which were hiring out tents for upwards of $300 for only one night, and decided to save some cash by creating her own.

She used sheets and pillows already purchased from homeware store Adairs and found cheap, reliable teepee-style tents for only $25 each at her local Kmart in Queensland.

‘I already had three mattresses so I only purchased two  $9 single air mattresses from Kmart, Fox Cushion Covers (AliExpress) $2.50 each, lanterns from IKEA $5 each, Helium balloons $1 each from a local cheap shop, and battery candles for inside lanterns for $2 from Kmart,’ Vanessa added.

‘The Kmart Teepee Tents are so versatile. Mums could really make any themed party with them.’

Arranging the mattresses around her living room and attaching the teepees to the end, Vanessa skillfully created a stunning slumber party room perfect for a group of young boys.

The room was also furnished with birthday bunting and twinkling lights – put together after two hours of decorating.

‘I purchased the Happy Birthday Banner from Etsy and printed, cut up and decorated myself,’ she said.

Vanessa says her DIY party was helped enormously by Kmart’s cheap and good quality products – and admits a lot of her homeware also comes from the budget department store.

Following the successful party Vanessa shared her creation with other Kmart mums on Facebook – and attracted thousands of reactions from other parents.
