The magnitude of global events since the turn of the century has provided plenty of lessons in leadership.

Britain’s boardroom bosses now need to steel themselves amid fresh global uncertainty.

In the UK – as elsewhere – conversations are inevitably turning to defence as the world becomes a more dangerous place.

City leaders have an important role, which goes beyond merely ensuring access to finance for defence firms.

Workforces across the United Kingdom are bolstered by the presence of Armed Forces Reservists – men and women who devote their spare time to protecting the nation. I am proud my wife, Lady Mayoress Florence King, serves among them.

Reservists are committed, focussed and benefit from arguably the best leadership training anywhere in the world.

But there is more businesses can do to help them, and by extension, our Armed Forces. Let us speak plainly: the retention and recruitment of reserves is vital for our national security.

Events around the world show just how quickly confrontation can arise.

If the UK needed to mobilise at speed, knowing who among our staff are Reservists, what skills they possess and how they can be reached, will be essential.

Companies will tell you they are proud of their Reservists and veterans. Yet too few know who they are, where they are, or what they can do.

Signing the Armed Forces Covenant is another crucial step for businesses looking to strengthen both their workforce and the wider UK economy.

A growing number of firms in the City are already exhibiting best practice by recognising the benefits of hiring, promoting and supporting Reservists and veterans.

But these efforts need to be replicated right around the country to make a meaningful difference.

Perceptions about who can become a Reservist must also change. Today’s gamers are tomorrow’s drone operators.

A successful economy relies on a well-defended nation. Stronger support for Reservists in our workplaces is the least we can do.
