Supporters mock Benjamin Mendy as he claims Marseille’s Velodrome has better atmosphere than Anfield

Benjamin Mendy caused uproar on Twitter on Wednesday night as he criticised Anfield’s atmosphere just hours after Manchester City were thrashed at Liverpool.

Mohamed Salah, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Sadio Mane scored the three goals to secure the advantage heading into the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final.

It was a first visit to Anfield for Mendy, who has spent much of his debut season at City recovering from a cruciate ligament injury suffered in September, but the Frenchman appeared less than impressed by the stadium’s atmosphere.

‘Now I see Anfield for my first time but the Velodrome are the best atmosphere,’ Mendy wrote on Twitter, tagging former club Marseille’s official account.

It seems even the echoing of ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ around Anfield wasn’t enough to impress the City defender, who spent three seasons with Marseille before making his switch to Monaco.

It may have been an unwise decision from Mendy, however, as Twitter users descended on him to mock his bitterness at City’s second successive defeat to Liverpool.

‘BRO HOW ARE U GONNA TWEET THIS AFTER WE GOT SPANKED 3-0,’ one supporter, clearly of City, wrote in capital letters as he expressed his rage at the Tweet.

Another user, this time an obvious Liverpool supporter, wrote: ‘Guy is so shameless. His team got battered today and still talking about the atmosphere. Guy with this mentality shouldn’t be near any football club.’

‘City lose 3-0 and Mendy tweets about how OM atmosphere is better than Anfield,’ added another followed by a long line of emoji’s.

One wrote: ‘Shame on you… please be focus on your new team otherwise go back to Marseille !! But you prefer city salary than Marseille salary’.

However, while many took to verbally criticising the Frenchman, others employed various gifs – the most notable being of Klopp in hysterics in the Liverpool dugout during Liverpool’s thrashing of Everton earlier this season.

Mendy, known as a professional with a sense of humour, may be unfazed by the critique he received, but should be concerned by City’s European future.

A three-goal deficit is a big mountain to climb, even for the likes of City who have dominated the Premier League with ease this season.

A quarter-final exit at the hands of Liverpool, who also ended their unbeaten league campaign, will sting and there will be a score to settle in Tuesday’s second leg without a doubt.
