A young woman had to be rescued from a rip by lifeguards in dramatic scenes after she went for an ill-advised ocean swim to welcome in 2023 at Surfer’s Paradise.

The woman, still wearing her black party dress and sneakers, ventured into the Gold Coast surf amid New Year’s  Eve celebrations and began to struggle after getting caught in a rip.

Lucky for her, lifeguards were on duty and spotted her in distress with one paddling out to pluck her from the swirling currents.

Surf rescue crews and one of the woman’s friends shone spotlights on the water to help the rescue operation.

Back in shallow water, the lifeguard steadied the exhausted woman and, after  making sure she was alright, let her head off to continue her New Year’s celebrations.

She then showed her relief and appreciation by enthusiastically hugging the beefy lifeguard. 

Striding back up the beach, she smiled broadly at her mates after the misadventure.

Thousands of people flocked to Surfer’s Paradise and Broadbeach on the Gold Coast, with many of them partying on the famous beaches and adjacent parks.

Live music, DJs and food trucks kept the packed crowds entertained before the midnight countdown.

Family-friendly events were held during the day, followed by midnight fireworks displays at Broadbeach, Coolangatta and Surfers Paradise.
