The most ‘iconic’ restaurant in the world has been named – and it’s not located in a renowned foodie hotspot like Rome, Paris or Tokyo.
According to Taste Atlas – a culinary online catalogue – a cosy diner in Vienna known for its signature ‘Wiener schnitzel’ has snagged the winning title.
Figlmüller in Austria has been feeding the city for 115 years, and perfected its delicacy, which has become synonymous with the European capital.
Dubbed ‘the house special that became a city symbol’, it is served with a ‘potato-field salad’ and recommended alongside a glass of wine or beer.
The venue, the ‘secret’ is in the pork used for the classic dish, as as the ‘pounding’ of the meat before it is battered and fried.
‘There are nearly as many variations on Wiener schnitzel as there are Viennese,’ Figlmüller claims.
‘But none have achieved as much acclaim and fame. And we think it’s a matter of size. But size wouldn’t matter, if the schnitzel weren’t so wonderfully delicious – made from top-quality, local ingredients.’

‘Renowned for their longevity, reliability, and iconic dishes, they are more than just dining spot,’ the website read.
‘They embody the spirit of their cities. The ranking reflects their history, public ratings, and TasteAtlas scores for their signature dishes.’
The online restaurant inventory praised the site, which they say started ‘as a small wine house in 1905’.
‘Today, Figlmüller is a renowned restaurant in Vienna, run by the family’s fourth generation.
‘The restaurant earned its fame by serving one of the best and biggest Schnitzel in the city.’
Brothers Hans Jr. and Thomas Figlmüller have been running the family business for the past few years.

‘The Figlmüller family has deep ties to the Austrian capital,’ the diner’s restaurant says.
‘Maintaining the traditions of the Viennese tavern culture is a priority for both brothers.
‘But they also know how to innovate in style. In addition to the pair of Figlmüller restaurants in the city, they have now opened up six other locations across Vienna.
‘From a cosy beer pub, chic bistro, a new interpretation of a classic tavern, an aperitivo bar with a spectacular view to a burgerstand and a coffee shop at Vienna Airport.’
The first location, which is on Wollzeile behind St. Stephen’s Cathedral, boasts four out of five on TripAdvisor, where it has more than 10,000 reviews.
Diners have praised the ‘fantastic’ food, ‘nice ambience’ and ‘friendly’ staff.
Taste Atlas’s second place pick was L’Antica Pizzeria de Michele in Naples, Italy, and Hofbräuhaus München – a Bavarian inn – in Germany.
Fourth place went to Gino e Toto Sorbillo in Naples, while fifth was Paragon Restaurant in Kozhikode, India.
Next came Café de Tacuba, in Mexico City, which features a selection of historic recipes from the region.
In seventh was Peter Cat in Kolkata, which specialises in Indo-Iranian cuisine, followed by the iconic Katz’s Delicatessen in Manhattan.
Finishing up the top ten were the Karne Garibaldi Santa Tere in Guadalajara, Mexico and El Pimpi in Málaga, Spain.
It comes as, in September, the best fine-dining restaurants for 2024 were named by Tripadvisor, with Northcote in Lancashire rated the best in the UK and No.3 in the world.
The Michelin-starred eatery, in the village of Langho, was awarded the accolade as part of Tripadvisor’s 2024 Travellers’ Choice Best of the Best Restaurants awards, determined by the ‘quality and quantity of traveller reviews and ratings posted on Tripadvisor over a 12-month period’.
The overall fine-dining winner is three-Michelin-starred Restaurant Pic in Valence, France , with Restaurante 1621 in Cartagena, Colombia, claiming the silver medal.
The No.1 restaurant in the USA was the two-Michelin-starred Daniel in New York, while ‘Exp.restaurant’ in Pokolbin, New South Wales , secured the gold medal for Australia.
The rest of the fine-dining top 10 comprises one-Michelin-starred Casa Vigil in Mendoza, Argentina (fourth); one-star Maison Medard in Boulleret, France (fifth); one-star Tour d’Argent in Paris (sixth); one-star Leclere Cuisine d’Arrivage in Montpellier, France (seventh); Akira Back on the 37th floor of the Marriott Marquis in Bangkok, Thailand (eighth); The Grove in Auckland, New Zealand (ninth); and three-Michelin-starred Ristorante Villa Crespi in Orta San Guilio, Italy (10th).
