Surry Hills stand-off: Man is arrested after woman and baby allegedly taken hostage for 10 hours

A police stand-off has ended after a man allegedly took a woman and a baby hostage in an apartment complex.

Specialist police burst into the home on Belvoir Street in Surry Hills, Sydney, on Sunday morning and arrested a 36-year-old man more than 10 hours after arriving at the scene.

The woman and the baby were allegedly taken hostage about 9:30pm on Saturday.

The 36-year-old was taken to St Vincents Hospital under police guard while the woman and child were unharmed.

Negotiators joined specialist police and paramedics on the scene to try and break the stand-off with the man and have the alleged hostages returned safely.

Members of the public have been urged to avoid the area after police closed several roads surrounding the complex.
