A man suspected of shooting an off-duty officer who intervened in attempted robbery at a Wisconsin bar where he was having a drink’ has been arrested 10 days after the killing using the slain cop’s handcuffs.
Dalquavis Ward, 26, of Milwaukee allegedly gunned down officer John Hetland, a 24 year veteran of the Racine Police Department, at the Teezers Tavern on June 17.
Dad-of-two Hetland had witnessed armed robbery unfolding, police said, and tried to intervene before being shot dead.
He is understood to have jumped over the bar to confronted a masked man when he was shot.
Convicted felon Ward, who has not been charged, was taken into custody on Thursday in Hetland’s cuffs Kenosha County sheriff David Beth confirmed, adding: ‘That part feels good.’
The shooter had been labelled a ‘coward’ by Racine County sheriff Christopher Schmaling.

Police launched a manhunt for gunman, issuing photos of a suspect in a black hoodie and trousers and a reward for information climbed to $80,000.
Howell said Thursday: ‘John was clearly a special member of our department. But we have a lot of members who exemplify the same spirit.
‘The only way we can honor John Hetland is to emulate John Hetland.’
In a statement police said: ‘Ward’s arrest was made with the cooperation of over 17 law enforcement agencies and thousands of hours of work by investigators.’
They added that crime lab information had led them to a suspect.

Mayor Cory Mason added: ‘The city experienced a loss that we haven’t experienced in 45 years.
‘Our city has been grieving [but now] we can breathe a sigh of relief’.
Ward was was convicted of strangling his girlfriend in 2015 and of disorderly conduct a year later, TMJ4 reports.
