SUTTON: Liverpool finally challenged in Atletico loss… but why has Premier League not done same?

CHRIS SUTTON: Liverpool finally got a Premier challenge from Atletico Madrid… league stroll might have led to difficult defeat as they struggled to cope with Diego Simeone’s intense and ferocious side

  • Liverpool lost 1-0 against Atletico Madrid in their Champions League first leg
  • No one in the Premier League has challenged Jurgen Klopp’s side like this
  • Premier League stroll might have led to Liverpool finding this game so difficult

Why has no one in the Premier League challenged Liverpool like this?

They call it the best league in the world yet Atletico Madrid, who have been average in La Liga this season, proved to be Liverpool’s biggest test of the season.

It was fascinating to see Liverpool being challenged for once. Maybe it is a consequence of them finding the Premier League an absolute stroll that they found this so difficult.

Liverpool lost 1-0 against Atletico Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano on Tuesday night

I cannot remember a team showing Liverpool the same level of intensity as Atletico. They were ferocious with their defending, superbly organised, sharp and aggressive. Liverpool were slightly off it.

Trent Alexander-Arnold was not at his best, Virgil van Dijk was sloppy.

I had thought this Atletico side was not as strong as last year’s, but they showed they still have the desire.

It’s a lesson for the Premier League. Liverpool earned the right last season in the competition, and they are going to have to do so again.
