Swimmer, 21, dies after ‘getting into difficulty’ in a reservoir, taking UK’s heatwave death toll to seven

A swimmer died today after ‘getting into difficulty’ in a reservoir, taking the UK’s heatwave death toll to seven.  

Police were called to Chasewater Reservoir in Staffordshire at 6pm after reports two people were in danger. 

The body of a 21-year-old man was pulled from the water but a 13-year-old girl managed to escape.

The 267-acre reservoir is a popular swimming spot for families and was thronging with families enjoying the hot weather. 

Staffordshire Police are informing the victim’s family and he has not been named. 

He is the seventh person to die in the UK in the record-breaking summer heatwave. 

A 30-year-old man was pulled from the River Clyde hours after the body of a 63-year-old was found off the Isle of Wight on Friday. 

Earlier, two men – 25 and 26 – died after being swept off rocks in Torquay, while the day before 12-year-old Shukri Yahya Abdi drowned in a river in Manchester.   

Staffordshire Police said: ‘We are currently investigating the circumstances around the death of a man in Chasewater Country Park in Burntwood this evening.

‘A 13-year-old girl made it safely out of the water, but tragically a 21-year-old man died.

‘Officers continue to investigate the circumstances of what happened and are appealing for anyone with information to call 101 quoting incident 654 of 30 June.’
