Switzerland could be without one of their key players for Saturday’s Euro 2024 quarter-final clash against England that could give a huge boost to the Three Lions.

Gareth Southgate’s squad avoided an embarrassing last-16 exit against Slovakia as Jude Bellingham scored in the 95th minute to take the match to extra time prior to Harry Kane bagging the winner.

Victory set up a last-eight clash against the Swiss who are hoping to advance to a first-ever European Championship semi-final after previously being dumped out by France at the same stage three-years ago.

England head into the match as favourites despite producing an underwhelming tournament campaign so far, but will be fearful of Switzerland’s ability to cause an upset after they beat reigning champions Italy last time out.

However, they could now be without one of their key midfielders after it was revealed that the former Arsenal star was undergoing a scan after being injured.

Granit Xhaka has been one of the stars of Euro 2024 so far and is now a major selection doubt in what could be a devastating blow for head coach Murat Yakin.

The Bayer Leverkusen star missed training last Thursday citing a muscle complaint, but recovered to start the 2-0 win against Italy and play the duration of the tie.

However, Xhaka has since admitted he was struggling after just 15 minutes of the knockout clash and is now being assessed in a bid to discover the true extent of the injury.

‘We practised penalty shootouts before the Italy game. On my first attempt I felt something in my left adductor,’ Xhaka told a press conference.

‘That’s why I skipped training on Thursday. On Friday in the final training session everything was fine again.

‘But in the game I felt it again after 15 minutes. Luckily we have very good doctors who gave me something for it. I was able to play the whole game afterwards, which was important for me.

‘We’ll do an MRI on Monday and see what exactly it is. But I have seven days now to get everything treated.’

Xhaka also sent a warning to England about underestimating Switzerland, believing his nation can go even further in the competition.

‘I’m not going to say we’re going to win the tournament,’ he added.
