Switzerland out of running to host 2026 Winter Olympics after citizens refuse to fund country’s bid

Switzerland is out of the running to host the 2026 Winter Olympics after citizens voted to reject the country’s bid.

Voters in the Swiss canton of Valais rejected a proposal to fund a bid to stage the tournament in Sion.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has confirmed that Switzerland will not nominate a different city, leaving six countries bidding for host status.

‘There will be no Swiss candidature for the organisation of the Olympic Winter Games 2026,’ the IOC confirmed in a statement.

‘The procedure continues with the six other National Olympic Committees, Austria, Canada, Italy, Japan, Sweden and Turkey.

‘We would like to thank all those involved who have embarked on this adventure, starting with the Sion 2026 Committee, the Federal Council, the Valais authorities and the city of Sion.

‘We also welcome the support of the Swiss Olympic Committee and all the athletes who have been involved in the Sion 2026 bid.’
