Sydney bushfires leaves train passengers to watch on as flames burn around the T8 line

Train passengers have watched on in horror as the area around their carriage became engulfed in flames from an out-of-control fire.

The footage was shot at Holsworthy, south-west of Sydney, where a bushfire is ravaging dangerously close to hundreds of homes.

Firefighters are expected to continue to fight the blaze until midnight when a wind change is expected.

In the video, towering clouds of billowing, dark grey smoke are the first sign of trouble for those on board.

As the busy commuter train makes its way along the tracks, flames begin to appear from within the nearby bush.

Minutes later, as smoke blocks passengers’ window view to the outside, the flames grow in size and number and appear to burn just metres from the tracks.

After initially starting as a grass fire in Casula on Saturday afternoon, the soon-to-be bushfire became out-of-control.

One passenger took to Facebook to showcase just how close the flames came to the train and its occupants

‘On the train and there is a big fire between Glenfield and Holsworthy. It’s jumped the tracks and everything,’ said Haylee Reely from Macquarie Fields.

Earlier today as fire encroached continually closer to homes, police officers went door to door, warning residents to leave before it was too late.

Residents were later told to seek immediate shelter when it became too late to leave.

The Holsworthy area is serviced solely by the busy T8 train line which runs from the western suburbs to central Sydney.

A Sydney Trains spokesperson said the line was later shut with buses replacing train services as the fires became more aggressive .

‘Sydney Trains has been liaising with emergency services throughout the incident and immediately shut the line when it was deemed unsafe by Fire and Rescue NSW,’ she said.
