Sydney man pulled from burning car by his brother

A man admits he is ‘very lucky’ to be alive after his ute burst into a massive fireball on a busy motorway.

Robert Smith, his brother and a friend were driving along the M1 in Sydney late last night when an unidentified spark ignited their car in flames.

Mr Smith’s brother and friend made it out of the car safely, but he was still stuck inside.

‘I literally just thought this is it, this is it, this is how I’m going to go,’ he told Nine News.

The incident occurred at about 10:30pm on Wednesday night near Somersby.

Mr Smith was driving the car, and was stuck behind the wheel as the car was engulfed by flames.

‘If it wasn’t for my brother… he jumped in the car, in the flame with me, unbuckled my seatbelt and just grabbed me,’ Mr Smith said through tears.

The friend is also in hospital after he leapt from the burning vehicle as it was still moving. 

Police say from talking with the passengers in the car and the wreckage of the car, something may have exploded from underneath the seat.
