Sydney man to face court for attacking a homeless person

  • The 38-year-old homeless man has been taken to hospital with serious injuries
  • NSW police have arrested the older man and he will face court on Monday 

A man will face court for allegedly attacking a homeless man who fell asleep on a bench at Sydney’s Hyde Park in the early hours of Sunday.

NSW police allege a 52-year-old man attempted to murder the homeless individual in an unprovoked attacked at 5am using a glass bottle which caused a serious wound to his nose.

The older man had then allegedly raised a small shopping trolley over the 38-year-old victims’s head and had hit him repeatedly with it.

The attack only stopped after a passerby intervened and protected the victim with his bike.

Officers from Sydney City Local Area Command have arrested the older man.

Both men are believed to be unknown to each other prior to the attack.

The homeless man has been taken to St Vincent’s Hospital with serious injuries, including for bleeding on the lungs and brain. 

He is currently in a stable condition.

While the older man has been arrested and taken to the Day Street police station and charged with causing grievous bodily harm with the intent to murder.

He has been refused bail and will appear at Central Local Court on Monday.
