An intense heatwave will bake large parts of Sydney hours after the mercury soared to almost 50C in Victoria for the first time since Australia’s Black Summer.
Weatherzone Senior Meteorologist Thomas Hough said temperatures will climb to the low 40s in Sydney’s western suburbs and 33C in the CBD on Tuesday.
Temperatures are expected to skyrocket to 42C in Penrith, 42C in Richmond, 40C in Liverpool and Blacktown and 38C in Parramatta.
For the first time since the Black Summer of 2019-2020 the mercury in Victoria peaked at 47.1C at the tiny town of Walpeup in Victoria’s northwest on Monday.
Melbourne also sweltered as temperatures topped 38.1C just before 3pm.
However, forecasters say some much-needed relief is on the way.
‘A southerly change is expected to arrive between around 6pm and 8pm for Sydney, bringing significantly cooler temperatures on Wednesday, with the forecast maximum for the city in the mid-20s,’ Mr Hough told Daily Mail Australia.
‘The heat is being caused by hot northerly winds from Australia’s interior moving over the country’s southeast, ahead of a cold front and approaching southerly change.’

More than 2,500 homes and businesses are without power in Bankstown, in Sydney’s west, as temperatures soar across the city.
Ausgrid said repairs for the outage are expected to be completed by 12.30pm.
Australia’s east coast experienced the highest demand for electricity since January 2020 on Monday.
While NSW sizzles under heatwave conditions, South East Queensland has been smashed by a slow-moving rain bomb with over 140mm of rain dumped on Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast and Moreton Bay on Monday night.
Kallangur, in the Moreton Bay region, was lashed with 70mm of rain in just one hour.
