Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane weather: Final blast of heat for the year sparks urgent weather warning

Millions of Aussies will struggle through a final blast of heat for the year as temperatures in one state climb to a sweltering 40C.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a heatwave warning for residents across south-east Queensland on Saturday.

Ipswich is set to hit 40C while the mercury will reach 37C in Brisbane, 36C in the Gold Coast and 35C in the Sunshine Coast.

Temperatures in Brisbane will dip slightly on Sunday with tops of 33C expected before cooler conditions settle in ahead of New Year’s Eve.

The blistering heatwave will also take temperatures well past 40 degrees across parts of Queensland’s west.

The outback town of Julia Creek, which is located 250km east of Mount Isa, could reach tops of 44C while Birdsville, in the state’s south-west, is set to hit 36C.

The mercury in the small town, which is located close to the South Australian border, hit a staggering 47C on Boxing Day.

The heatwave warning, which was issued on Friday, will remain in place until Monday in the Sunshine State.

The warning is current for Queensland’s North West, Central West, the Whitsundays, Darling Downs and the Southeast Coast Districts.

The Bureau of Meteorology’s Daniel Hayes said parts of the state’s south-east and coastal areas could be affected by showers and storms on Saturday.

‘We’ll have some activity through the southeast and potentially increase around the coast through New Year’s Eve and into New Year’s Day,’ Mr Hayes told Newswire.

Meanwhile, firefighters continue to battle catastrophic bushfires across the Grampian’s region in Victoria’s north-west.

The out-of-control fire has ripped through a massive 74,000 hectares of land, which is around the estimated size of Singapore.

The blaze, which has grown quickly in size after it burned 6,000 hectares last week, has destroyed eight properties so far including a residential property and six sheds.

All emergency warnings have been downgraded to watch and act alerts in and around western Victoria’s Grampians National Park, but the area from Long Gully Road to College Road remains unsafe.

Conditions in western Victoria are expected to remain settled and mild until Sunday, before westerly winds give way to warmer northerlies on Monday.
