Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane weather: Millions to swelter this weekend as blistering heatwave grips the east coast

Millions of Aussies are bracing for sweltering weather this weekend as a severe heatwave grips the southern states.

Melbourne is the city forecast to receive the brunt of the heat and is set to reach a high of 37C on Saturday and 38C on Sunday.

It’s expected to be Victoria’s hottest weekend in a decade, as the 76,000-hectare fire in the Grampians National Park continues to burn at a ‘Watch and Act’ level.

Punters lining up for the second day of the test match between Australia and India at the Sydney Cricket Ground were already feeling the heat on Saturday morning, with the mercury set to hit 29C later in the day.

The heatwave will bring blistering conditions for players and spectators alike.

But the heat in Sydney and regional NSW is not forecast to peak until Sunday and Monday, with a high of 33C in the Harbour City at the start of next week.

Adelaide is expected to tip into the high 30s on Saturday, while other parts of South Australia will exceed 40C.

Coober Pedy, northwest of Adelaide, will hit an infernal 43C.

It’s expected to be Victoria’s hottest weekend in the past 10 years

The heat will elevate fire danger ratings in parts of southeastern Australia over the next few days.

More than 10 fires are burning across Western Australia, but all had been downgraded to advice levels by Friday afternoon.

The Bureau of Meteorology’s Johnathan How said the sweltering weather conditions are not expected to ease until Monday.

‘Low intensity heatwaves are common at this time of year, but once we get into the severe category especially with the run of hot days and warm nights, some people can find it quite challenging,’ Mr How said.
